How to choose your LinkedIn profile picture

Once your LinkedIn profile is live, you will be prompted to add a profile photo. Your profile picture is an important part of your online presence; it allows people to connect with you quickly, in a snap.

Fair or not, we are often judged on our appearance, even in a professional environment. When it comes to choosing a photo for your LinkedIn profile, you don’t need to hire a professional photographer to take your profile picture, but there are some things to consider when taking and selecting your photo. Here are some tips on how to go about selecting the right profile photo:

Select a recent photo

Be sure to choose a recent photo of yourself so that people can recognize you in person. If you have to choose between several photos, ask friends or family members which one makes you look best.

Center yourself

Since profile photos often appear as small thumbnails, choose a photo that shows only your head, neck and a bit of your shoulders. If the photo shows your entire body, people may not see your face clearly and not recognize you in person. Choose a photo where you appear to be smiling in a natural way. A smile will make you look friendly and approachable to those who view your profile.

Taking a picture

Dress in a professional manner

Dress in a way that is appropriate for your professional field. In other words, dress as you would for an interview in your industry. Choose colors that work for you.

Avoid wearing a strapless dress or top, as a photo that shows only your head and shoulders will make you look naked. Avoid wearing heavy jewelry or trendy hairstyles that will distract attention from your face.

You and only you

Your profile pictures should be of you and only you. Avoid posting a photo with people in it. If your background contrasts with your face, try to blur it to focus on you. In general, we recommend taking a photo where the background is a solid color.

Ask for help

Ask a friend or family member to take your picture. You will be assured that the person can easily adjust their position to the right height and light. You will also feel more comfortable and your smile will look more authentic.

Become a photographer

If no one is available to take the picture, you can use your webcam or the front lens of your phone/tablet to take the picture. Be sure not to take the photo with the camera in your hand – selfie-style self-portraits are rarely professional.

To take the picture, position your camera so that you have a clear, unobstructed view of yourself. If necessary, use books or lenses to elevate your camera so the lens is points at you. Do not stand too far (or too close) to the lens. It is best to place the camera at eye level. Set the timer on your camera with a minimum delay of 3 seconds, allowing you to adjust once the timer starts. Take several shots, you can make a selection later.
